Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics – Informatics, VNU University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics – Informatics, VNU University of Science was founded in 1956. The Faculty has changed its name from the Faculty of Natural Science (1956) into the Faculty of Mathematics – Physics (1961), the Faculty of Mathematics (1964), the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics (1970) and the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics – Informatics (1987).
The Faculty is one of the largest training and research units in the fields of Mathematics, Mechanics and Informatics in Vietnam, with the mission to provide high quality program of study, to conduct basic researches, applied researches, and to attend to the Mathematical needs (including Information Science and Mechanics) of the University and the community.
Currently, the Faculty has 07 Departments (Computational and Applied Mathematics, Algebra - Geometry - Topology, Mathematical Analysis, Mechanics, Probability - Statistics, Differential equation & Dynamical System, and Informatics) and Lab of Data Science.
In terms of human resources, the Faculty currently has 82 staff members in total, including 05 Professors, 03 Doctors of Science; 09 Associate Professors and nearly 50 Doctors. The Faculty board has 04 members, including 01 Dean, 03 Vice Deans. There are 02 support staffs in the Faculty Board responsible for staff organization and special training programs. The Office of the Faculty has 05 staffs.
The training programs of the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics –Informatics are divided into 03 levels: Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees.
For Bachelor degree, the Faculty has 04 training programs: Mathematics (standard and honors program); Mechanics - Mathematics; Applied Mathematics and Computer Science; Computer and Information Science (standard and honors program). Annually, the Faculty recruits approximately 300 students for these 4 training programs. In addition, the Faculty collaborates with VNU University of Education to participate in training the major of Mathematics Teacher Education following the 3+1 model. In 2013, the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics –Informatics was among the first units in Vietnam National University - Hanoi conducting assessments based on AUN-QA criteria in Mathematics with good result.
For Master’s degree, there are 10 training programs, including Algebra and Number Theory; Geometry and Topology; Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics; Elementary Mathematics Methods; Mathematical Analysis; Applied Mathematics; Mechanics of Solids; Mechanics of Fluids; Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science and Data Science.
For PhD. degree, there are 9 training programs, including Algebra and Number Theory; Geometry and Topology; Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics; Mathematical Analysis; Differential and Integral Equations; Applied Mathematics; Mechanics of Solids; Mechanics of Fluids; Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science.
In the Faculty, there are many research groups with excellent results, in which there are 03 research groups recognized as VNU strong research groups. The Faculty staffs have received many awards in scientific researches such as Ta Quang Buu awards in basic researche; Award of Institute of Mathematics (VAST); VNU award in Science and Technology, ... They have been working on a variety of VNU, MoET and NAFOSTED scientific projects. Annually, the Faculty staffs have around 60 scientific publications on the ISI journals.
The Faculty has been collaborating with many universities all over the world, such as University of Washington (United States), University of Paris 13 (France), University of Toulon (France), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, ... as well as many industrial companies and groups. Annually, there are many students of the Faculty sent to study and exchange in the partner Universities or do internships in different companies.
The fourth Industrial Revolution has revealed many huge opportunities, along with multiple unpredictable challenges; nevertheless, the Faculty of Mathematics – Mechanics –Informatics always clearly determine its great mission, which is to provide high quality program of study in the fields of Mathematics, Mechanics and Informatics. The Faculty is making an effort to become the top training and research center in Mathematics, Mechanics and Informatics in Vietnam as well as in Southeast Asia.
